Bleached Spikes

Ani DiFranco's Dick was at the Warehouse Live Stage. They drove all the way from California to endure the Houston heat. They're a more experienced band.. the lead guitarist had bleached spikes protruding from his scalp in all different directions.. yeah I really just wanted a t-shirt.

Free Press Summer Fest Wrap-Up

We walked across what felt like the Sahara Desert (but was really just the full length of the festival) to see Ani DiFranco's Dick, and I'm glad we did. The five-piece from California gave us the punky punch we needed, and get total respect from me for being mostly clad in the punk uniform of all black, despite the blazing heat. The band sounded raw and spunky, and even though there was a little physical shakiness (from nervousness, heat exhaustion or being hungover, I'm not sure), but you'd never know it by listening to the group rip out quick, snarky tune, one after the other.

"Hipster Boyfriend" at Free Press Summer Fest 2011

10. Ani DiFranco’s Dick (Not listed)
Of course I was intrigued by the name. Who wouldn’t be? But what’s in a band name? I missed a couple songs of an incredible break-out Fleet Foxes show at Pitchfork a few years ago, because I wanted to check out a band with “fuck” in the title. Huge mistake. Checking out Ani DiFranco’s Dick was no mistake. The punk band had made a long journey from Oakland, was admittedly hungover and playing in 100 degree heat in the early afternoon on a small stage. The lead singer was a sweetheart and they have less than 25 Twitter followers. How could you not root for them? Their songs were clever, fast, fun and I loved the “hipster boyfriend” track I posted here. 7.5/10
